It is located on the Holy Spirit Levee in downtown of Manzanillo, in the place called El Tajo, next to the Fisherwoman sculpture, in front of the León gas station, next to the outdoors theater.
It is possible to access the Historical Center by the Colima-Manzanillo highway, by Niños Héroes street, which is continuation of Miguel de la Madrid Hurtado boulevard, by taxi, automobile, or by urban bus routes that go from the bus station to downtown and to the hotel zone.
In the Holy Spirit Levee is at the moment a monument that was elevated in memory of the Scorpio tugboat, that took away a ship that caught fire in the PEMEX wharves, thus avoiding a tragedy of tremendous proportions in the Port of Manzanillo
On Monday March 13, 1972 at 11:55, the Mary Ellen Conway ship tank of Panamanian flag, but of Liberian matriculation and with Italian crew in its majority, was in the PEMEX wharf carrying out fuel unloading maneuvers, when suddenly the fire took place. It is assumed that the friction of an electrical cable or some match initiated it, quickly taking the wreck an incredible increase, spreading the panic between the neighbors of the port
In a while the port was evacuated; everybody left in different directions, since the PEMEX deposits are little meters from where the accident was caused. While most people left the city frightened in terrible confusion letting the Port isolated, registering some vehicles crashes, captain Leoncio Ucha Mora, without losing the serenity, and helped by the brave voluntary neighbors and a part of the Scorpio tugboat, helped to control the fire. The heroism of some volunteers, of which some left with first degree burns, freed the propagation of the attempt. Some of these volunteers were: Antonio Cisneros, Uvillaldo DÃÂaz, José Leal, and the 16 year old boy, David Escalante
These valuable elements presented poisoning symptoms due to the strong smoke that was scattered by all the bay. After a tenacious fight they managed to run aground the Liberian boat in front of Playa Azul (Blue Beach), where it was fought for more than 16 hours to control the fire that was registered in the facilities of Mary Ellen Conwa, whose storage capacity is 100 thousand fuel barrels
Fortunately when retiring the Scorpio from the Liberian boat and although it only underwent some damages because of the fire, everything returned back to normal. The Scorpio was left in the middle little beach for many years, stranded, being consumed little by little by the effects of the swells and time, until some of its pieces were used to build this junk type sculpture that is a monument to its memory, and to those heroes who have been forgotten from the memory of the people from Manzanillo.
