Atractions Ixtlahuacán de los Reyes is a town of náhuatl tradition. In remote times their inhabitants dominated the south-east portion of the territory of Colima, from the mountain range to the coast. In the coastal lagoons, the ixtlahuaquenses processed the salt, which turned them into the main suppliers of the product in the region. They were also, during the colonial period, the unique natives who conserved in Colima the old occupation of the pochtecas, retailers that traveled great distances interchanging products. And although at present their inhabitants are all mestizos (Persons of mixed race), their cultural origin is clearly reflected in their customs. Nothing of the colonial architecture survived in this town, because according to the climatic surroundings, all the constructions, including the temple, were made of pajarete and hay ceiling, materials little resistant through time. In fact, the only place in Colima where houses constructed with old techniques and materials can be seen is Ixtlahuacán, which are still in use In the east flank of the garden is the church, constructed in the 50’s. From the architectonic point of view it is not very attractive, but in its interior keeps a valuable jewel of colonial art: a small sculpture of the Virgin, which dates from century XVII, possibly brought of Spain. There is also, in the sacristy, a great wrought wooden rattle exhibited today in the Museum. | Ixtlahuacán
