Visible from any point of the valley of Colima, the Stone of Juluapan is a gigantic monolith that gained size and importance with the legends woven around it. In order to locate it, it is necessary to look for the Great Hill (Cerro Grande), visible in the west of the valley of Colima; in its south end is located the Jurumpiche hill and on this one, the Stone, in the middle of its south side and almost at the top of the same.
Don Gregorio Torres Quintero narrates in his book Cuentos Colimotes the history of a great Chinese sailing vessel that was shipwrecked in the coasts of Colima, in the most remote past. The main passenger was prince Wang Wei, to which the lord of Coliman (King of Colimán), called Xi, offered magnificent lodging. That rocky crag called the attention of Wang Wei, describing it as a worthy place to be the tomb of a king. The prince returned to the east and he returned loaded with treasures for Xi. When the lord of Colima died, their subjects, remembering what Wang Wei said, they buried him under the stone, along with his treasure of jades and eastern silks.
Less elaborated and more popular is the legend told about the supposed treasures that the Indian Alonso left hidden in the cave located in the base of the monolith: a coffer full of jewels and small bags with gold and silver coins, product of his misdeeds
When under certain conditions of light the Stone of Juluapan can be seen standing out in a golden tone against the green of the hill, it is easy to understand why the imagination in many people has waked up. What it is not legend is that the cave in its base grows, not as a result of sorcery, but by the perseverance of the treasure finders.
Visiting the Stone of Juluapan is an excursion that is worth the pain. From its top you can have the best panoramic of the valley of Colima, and the hope will always exist to find a Chinese jewel, or at least with a silver Peso or any gold coin. This activity is not for everyone, because it demands a long walk uphill that is not dangerous, but difficult, because of the escarped land and the dense vegetation. It is recommended to go with a guide, who can contracted in the town of Juluapan, in the foot of the hill
In its neighborhoods, and in the same hill of the Jurumpiche, it is possible to practice free air activities in Delta Wing or Hang-glider. In order to practice them, it is necessary to have the aid of specialistic people in this kind of activities, since it is necessary to perfectly know the conditions that prevail in the place and the propitious time to make them. It is advisable to contact tourist guides and operators in the cities of Colima and Villa de Álvarez, or the Free flight Association.
