It is located within the Historical Center of Manzanillo, in downtown, between the Levee and the Municipal Palace, in the middle of the remodeled garden, against the end of México Avenue.
It is possible to access the Historical Center by the Colima-Manzanillo highway, by Niños Héroes street, which is continuation of Miguel de la Madrid Hurtado boulevard, by taxi, automobile, or by urban bus routes that go from the bus station to the Center of Manzanillo, and to the hotel zone.
Picudos, the term has been widely accepted to denominate the big fish of the Xiphiidae and Istiophoridae families, characterized of having an extremely long superior jaw. They form a group of pelagic species distributed in the tropical and subtropical regions of all the oceans in the world. In 1983 the monument to the Sailfish was constructed in the Crossing of Minatitlán, to show that way the importance of Manzanillo, with the symbolic representation that corresponds to it as the World-wide Capital of the Sailfish
In 1998 painter Lupita Navarro Peña directed the works to colour the monument of the Sailfish that previously had been always white. By the end of 2000 it returned to be totally white
In 2000 it was summoned to a contest to select the representative figure of Manzanillo; the winner was the sculpture made and presented by Architect Juan Manuel Limón Centeno, being a streamlined image of a sailfish in a blue tone, which contour has a special meaning as it represents the bay of Manzanillo. In 2001 the sculptor Sebastián presented a proposal great dimensions of the monument of the Sailfish, which was accepted to include it in the remodeling project of the Historical Center of the municipality of Manzanillo
