This natural site can be acceded exclusively by own or rented automobile. No passenger buses cover this route
To arrive to this place it is necessary to drive by the road that connects the cities of Colima and Villa de Ãlvarez with the city of Minatitlán. Nevertheless there are two alternatives to arrive at this Common land, both by two unpaved ways
The first one, which is fastest and is in better conditions, begins after driving during 25 kilometers through the mentioned way to Minatitlán. Then turn right en the crossing of Saúz and ascend following the signallings, towards the north until El Terrero. It has 16 km in length in the breach and it is drivable all the year
The second one is the longest, and its conditions are variable according to the time of the year. It begins after circulating during 16 kilometers. Turn right in the crossing of Juluapan and El Terrero, to ascend following the signallings, towards the north until the Pile. It has 50 km in length of unpaved road and is drivable all the year with appropriate vehicles for these lands.
Colima is part of one of the 12 reserves of the biosphere of the country. The Reserve of the Biosphere Sierra of Manantlán designated thus during 1988, presents noticeable climate and vegatation differences within itself; there are both extremes, that go from a barren vegetation, with dry fields, cactus, to a beautiful humid forest with an endless number of wild plants, like bamboo, orchids, pines, Quercus, etc
El Terrero, conformed as a beautiful wooded zone, preferred by its high scenic value, ideal to camp because of its mountain landscape, its cold climate and pure air, is located between the most representative tourist places
El Terrero Common Land has a part of it in the damping zone of the Reserve of the Biosphere Sierra of Manantlán, and another part within the nucleus zone of the same. El Terrero is a small ranch of little more than 100 people. The simple houses are made of wood, and the fences are made sometimes with the giant cactus plants, that produce a strong alcoholic liquor call, maguey juice
The interpretative hiking is practiced in Cerro Grande (Great Hill) that belongs to the Reserve of the Biosphere of the Sierra of Manantlán. The communities of Campo Cuatro (Field Four) and El Terrero are in charge of receiving and directing this trip through the routes and ways, where a great variety of natural beauties can be observed
The interpretative excursion trips are a way to make possible the environmental education in the non exploded natural areas, that allows that the visitor interrelates with the place. The intention of this type of trips is that the visitors directly know and appreciate the physical and biological training conditions of the same, its natural and cultural value, its ecological process, as well as the environmental problems and needs for its conservation
The lovers of nature, the animals, and wild plants, will have the opportunity to observe a big number of exotic birds and endangered species, in the (strong)El Terrero Reserve of the Common land.
This common land is part of a forest known as Cloud Forest, because it gets its humidity from rain. It is called that way because it is located in the high parts, as if it really was between the clouds, and its climate is very cold and humid; its ground is formed by limestone earth, which produces the formation of numerous caverns and holes in its land. For the visitors interested in the speleology, it is advisable to obtain communitarian guides that can lead you to these sites. It is said that there are more than 100 holes in the Great Hill
The most attractive residents of the biosphere are probably the birds, including wild turkeys, eagles, hawks, parrots, sparrows, owls, and woodpeckers. The Cloud Forest is also a house of butterflies, frogs, lizards, pumas, wild cats, squirrels, rabbits, armadillos, and the Dragoon of Gila, endangered reptile. All the species are protected and any type of hunting is not allowed
